Join me today for a Twitter Chat about Hashtags on #ConnectedPD

Inspired by the success of #edchat, ConnectedPD is experimenting with hosting real time dialogues once a month in Twitter called First Friday – on the first Friday of each month, at noon EST. Today, their favorite "Hashtag Queen," (that's me!) is a guest along with Letha Goger, @OERlibrarian from ISKME.org.  Check the events tab here on their blog for details on how to participate.  

Connected PD is a new community-sourced Professional Development blog curated by the NROC team behind Hippocampus.org. Studio Connect is the online practice and design collaboratory for the Connected PD project to support educators and administrators in developing and implementing Next Practices in Learning and Teaching. 

At the center of Studio Connect is Next Practices in Learning and Teaching--the focus of Curating, Scaffolding and Mentoring. Studio Connect is distributed across the Connected PD blog http://connectedpd.posterous.com, the Connected PD group in Linked In, Twitter, Google+, Webinars (currently in Elluminate) and Facebook. In the future, other Studio Connect locations might include videoconferencing platforms, "virtual worlds" like Second Life and OpenSim, or online communities utilizing platforms like Ning. We welcome your suggestions for additional platforms and tools you'd like to see included.

The Connected PD blog features and explores emerging Next Practices. They're curating relevant content on Next Practices from the wider Open Education Resources (OER), Digital Media Learning (DML), Online Education and 21st Century Learning Design communities. We feature occasional interviews with Next Practices exemplars as one form of scaffolding and mentoring.

You’ll find the archive here (link launches the Elluminate session) of the first Connected PD Webinar on the NROC Network website. http://www.nrocnetwork.org where you can hear a panel on Next Practices in Learning and Teaching with some excellent input from Next Practices thought leaders Lisa Dawley, Erin Knight, Vanessa Vartabedian, David Young and Peter Arashiro. All of the NROC Network webinars can be accessed here.

The Connected PD Linked In group hosts conversation about Next Practices and is used to collaborate on projects. Members can share current projects, expertise, or burning issues.

Great School Examples

I love sharing examples of great schools that employ promising practices, differentiated instruction, and passion driven learning. I also enjoy highlighting teachers that engage in student-centered learning like these teachers

• One Great Way to Differentiate Instruction – See how Deven Black designed a lesson that enabled students to tap into their strengths, interests, and learning styles.
• When students own the learning –See what happened when Keith Ferrell relinquished control and gave students a choice in how they would meet learning goals.
• Real Life Learning - Shelley Wright is a high school educator in Moose Jaw, SK. On her blog she shares, “I love learning more than anything else.” This post features the video of what  happens when school becomes real life.

Update Your Acceptable Use Policy This School Year with Guidelines from Consortium of School Networking (CoSN)

One of the great resources available over at the Banned Sites Awareness website is the Acceptable Use Policy Guide from The Consortium of School Networking (CoSN) which offers administrators guidelines for revising Acceptable Use Policies to reflect the current socio-mobile learning landscape. If you don't know, the Banned Sites Awareness website is filled with information and resources that celebrate the freedom to learn with participatory media in school. This particular resource provides guidelines and examples of various AUPs.  

The guidelines address the following topics: 

• How does policy differ from procedure and does the difference matter?


• What are the two major approaches used to develop district AUP policies?



• Is the district’s AUP a part of or the totality of the district’s technology policy? 



• What are the key federal laws affecting Internet access, safety, and social networking in schools?
